Hispanic Heritage Month at Anchor MS
  • Latest News

What does it mean to be Hispanic?

Does it have to do wit the color of a person's skin?

Does it have to do with the place where they love?

Just who are Hispanic People?

These are just a few questions the Anchor Middle School Students explored during Hispanic Heritage Month. Not only did students use information text to support these answers, but also their own personal experiences.

Students shared their family traditions and culture with their classmates. Favorite foods! Dances! Expressions and even childhood songs were enjoyed!

To express Hispanic Heritage, the students created a bulletin board to express their culture.

Welcome to the 2022-2023 School Year at Anchor!
  • Latest News

Greetings Anchor Families,

It’s hard to believe, but in less than a week, your child will be back or coming to Anchor for the first day. Our first day of school is Monday, August 29th. The entire Anchor staff has been busy finalizing details for our first week back, readying our halls for excitement, planning course schedules, and getting excited!

One very exciting piece of news is our new Anchor faculty members. I’d like to welcome and introduce all of you to:

Michelle Fico, School Social Worker

She comes to us highly recommended from the Brookfield School District.  Her experience includes behavior management, crisis intervention, and 504 case management.

Melissa Williams, School Counselor

As a school counselor with the Bridgeport School District, Melissa comes to Anchor as a bilingual school counselor with extensive experience in academic, career, and social emotional development.

James Pruitt, High School Science Teacher

We are very fortunate to have James at Anchor. He has extensive experience teaching in the alternative education setting and has project-based learning experience.

Justin Scully, High School Social Studies Teacher

Justin is an addition to our High School Social Studies team. Justin is joining Anchor from Bridgeport Public Schools. He also comes to us with years of experience with student centered and project-based learning background.

Ashley Johnson, High School English Teacher

Many of you may remember Ashley as a former Anchor substitute. Ashley taught English for Anchor students at the Boys and Girls Club last year and will be with us as a full time Anchor English teacher this year.

Other exciting news is our website! If you haven’t already visited, you can arrive at the site directly via www.spsanchor.org. A few areas to note is under “About our School” where you will find (to name a few):

  • Anchors’ Latest News and Announcements
  • A Monthly Newsletter and Letters (this one included) from me
  • Parent Resources – Please visit this site for a popular link on Social Emotional Learning for parents.
  • Portrait of a Graduate – The Portrait of a Graduate is embedded into all our courses

Like you, we don’t want your child to fall behind academically or get discouraged at any time throughout the year.  The number one factor for student success is attendance followed by engagement. Please ensure that your child attends school every day and arrives on time.   Here are a few practical tips to help support regular attendance:

  • Make sure your children keep a regular bedtime and establish a morning routine.
  • Ensure your children go to school every day unless they are truly sick
  • Avoid, when possible, scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session.
  • Talk to teachers, social workers, and our counselor for advice if your child feels anxious.
  • Develop back up plans to get to school if something comes up.  Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to take your child to school.

Please let us know how we can best support you and your child so he/she/they can show up for school on time every day.  Additionally, our new school counselor, Melissa Williams, will be contacting each student’s parent/guardian biweekly to share your child’s attendance, academics, social emotional learning progress.   We want your child to have a successful school year!

Have wonderful rest of your summer!

Laura Greene, Ed.D.

Coordinator of Alternative Education
